Motorola is officially ‘a Lenovo company’
Motorola has changed hands again. Yes, just nine months after Lenovo announced its plans to acquire Motorola Mobility from Google for a cool $2.91 billion, the deal has been completed.
Motorola announcedon its official blog that it’s now a member of Lenovo’s “family of companies.” Rick Osterloh, President and COO of Motorola Mobility, explains that Lenovo will give Moto a global scale and a diverse product portfolio that, when combined with Motorola’s, will include smartphones, wearables and PCs. Osterloh says that this will let Lenoto “push the boundaries of choice and value.”
Just because Motorola is now part of Lenovo, that doesn’t mean that the Motorola brand is disappearing. Motorola will continue to be headquartered in Chicago, and the company will keep its Motorola, Moto and DROID brands. Motorola will also continue to focus on offering “pure Android and fast upgrades” to consumers.
For now it sounds like the Motorola that we’ve come to know over the past year or so will stick around, which is exciting news for those of us that like the vanilla Android and speedy updates that Motorola has offered. However, with Lenovo’s big slice of the Asian mobile market and relatively small presence in the US, it’ll be interesting to see what both Lenovo and Motorola’s brands can do with this partnership going forward.
What would you like to see come of this new Lenovo-Motorola relationship?
